Foundations for our Future: A new initiative to support homes for our communities

Recently, we were able to tour a new Habitat for Humanity neighborhood in Alanson known as Meadowlands. This quaint neighborhood features 32 mixed-income homes perfect for families, with cute lawns and wonderfully built homes on donated land. This neighborhood will be real affordable housing for countless individuals in our community. As our Emmet County Housing Ready Director Andrea Jacobs put it, this is “housing for everyone.”

This development is being spearheaded by Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity, whose mission statement includes being “dedicated to eliminating poverty housing locally by constructing rehabilitating and preserving homes.” The Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity has created affordable housing for more than 60 families since 1990. Organizations such as Habitat for Humanity continue to be vital in our community as the housing crisis continues.

“This campaign will create a sustainable way for Habitat to permanently increase their yearly home builds from 3-4 per year to 13 or more, an increase of almost 400%.“

The Meadowlands subdivision is part of an exciting new campaign by Habitat for Humanity which launched on August 5th. The campaign, Foundations for Our Futures, is one of the largest building developments in their history with their goal being to build 43 new homes in our communities by 2025. Beyond the Meadowlands neighborhood, this campaign will include housing in East Jordan, Oden, and another subdivision in Alanson.

The Foundations for Our Futures campaign has a fundraising goal of $5 million. This size investment in our community would make an incredible difference in the housing needs of our community. NMHFH helps fund the initial construction costs before using proceeds from sold homes to reinvest in other housing. According to their press release, an initial capital pool of $5 million will result in over $12 million in construction. According to Habitat, “This campaign will create a sustainable way for Habitat to permanently increase their yearly home builds from 3-4 per year to 13 or more, an increase of 400%” Continuous construction such as this creates more opportunities for real middle-class families to live and thrive in Northern Michigan.

Housing North will continue to be a partner of any organization that is seeking to create affordable housing in Northern Michigan, and we thank Habitat for Humanity for their dedication to the cause!
